Cartridge heaters

General Information

Owing to their specific design, cartridge heaters provide an extremely high surface load and thus can fit in the tightest spaces while delivering maximum output. They are particularly suited for the plastics processing industry, tool and die manufacture as well as for heating furnaces and presses. Other possible uses must be clarified with the manufacturer.

Operating Conditions and Safety Instructions

Cartridge heaters may be produced either with or without built-in Fe-CuNi thermocouple as in accordance with DIN 43710. If requested, a NiCr-Ni thermocouple can also be produced. We can also supply them for a wide variety of connection types and insulating protective tubes.

It is necessary to make sure that the relevant fire safety instructions are observed and the appropriate safety precautions have been taken during installation. Both the heater and the material to be heated may not be subjected to any critical conditions (such as fire, explosion, formation of smoke and gas, etc.). It is also necessary to ensure that sufficient protection is provided against contact, dust and moisture.

Nonconforming installation and incorrect selection of control equipment may result in defects and accidents. Any other conditions of use or diverting from the intended use must be clarified with the manufacturer who must give his express approval. Otherwise the warranty is void and no liability will be assumed.

Installation Instructions

Cartridge heaters require a locating borehole as per ISO H7 with the lowest possible surface roughness. Crossing boreholes and cavities cause heat buildup and will destroy the heating elements. When using multiple cartridge heaters, the space between two heaters should be at least as big as the diameter of the cartridge heater.

Supply leads must be protected against liquid and paste materials as well as their steams.
When stored for long periods of time, the cartridge heaters must be placed in absolutely dry rooms or hermetically sealed plastic bags. If cartridge heaters have become moist, they may be dried in a drying oven at 180°C for 8 hours. The warranty is voided if the cartridge heaters are installed incorrectly.

Electrical Installation

The heater may only be installed by an authorized electrician or qualified personnel who have had proper instruction.

Make sure that the indicated operating voltage matches the supply voltage. Heat-resistant cabling must be used for all connections (see Operating Conditions and Safety Instructions). Cables must be installed in such a way that they do not come in contact with sharp-edged metal parts or hot surfaces.

Comment: The user must ensure that electrical connections are protected to prevent accidental contact.
