Heating-and-Cooling Combination

General Information

Combined heater/coolers with or without forced air cooling are used for heating and/or cooling of metallic extrusion cylinders used in the industrial sector.

First, the metallic cylinder is heated up. Once the operating temperature is achieved, the heater is switched off by a controller, and the frictional heat that occurs during the production process is used to maintain the required temperature. If the operating temperature gets too high, the flange-mounted blower is actuated and the extrusion cylinder is cooled down. This ensures an optimum temperature control over the entire length of the plasticizing injection cylinder.


Operating Conditions and Safety Instructions

The maximum operating temperature is 450°C. It is necessary to make sure that the relevant fire safety instructions are observed and the appropriate safety precautions have been taken. Both the combined heater/cooler system and the material to be heated may not be subjected to any critical conditions (such as fire, explosion, formation of smoke and gas, etc.). Only suitable heat-resistant cable sets may be used due to the high temperatures. It is also necessary to ensure that sufficient protection is provided against contact, dust and moisture.

The maximum surface load of the ceramic heating elements may not exceed 6 W/cm². Nonconforming installation and incorrect selection of control equipment may result in defects and accidents. Any other conditions of use or diverting from the intended use must be clarified with the manufacturer who must give his express approval. Otherwise the warranty is void and no liability will be assumed.


Installation Instructions

The cooling blades (in case of forced air cooling) and the corresponding heating elements must be mounted such that they fit the form of the cylinder surface to be heated. To this end, it is necessary to disassemble in part the combined heater/cooler that was completely preassembled for transportation and shipping. The upper part of the cooling jacket must be removed or opened depending on the design so that the clamping screws of the heating elements can be loosened and removed. Now the transport brace may be removed.

The opened heater/cooler system is ready to be mounted on the machine cylinder and secured gently by means of the clamping screws on the heating elements. Align the combined heater/cooler once the upper part of the cooling jacket is mounted or closed. After opening the upper part of the cooling jacket again, the clamping screws of the heating elements must be tightened to the recommended torque (15-20 Nm). After closing the upper part of the cooling jacket, the combined heater/cooler is ready for operation without having to remove the wiring. In general care must be taken that the metallic parts and/or wiring are free of any mechanical damage.


Electrical Installation

The heater may only be installed by an authorized electrician or qualified personnel who have had proper instruction.

Make sure that the indicated operating voltage matches the supply voltage. Heat-resistant cabling must be used for all connections (see Operating Conditions and Safety Instructions). Cables must be installed in such a way that they do not come in contact with sharp-edged metal parts or hot surfaces.

DIN-EN ISO 9001:2008 via TÜV Thuringia

Comment: The user must ensure that electrical connections are protected to prevent accidental contact.
